A Word About “2001: A Space Odyssey”

(Most, though certainly not all, of the movies I will now review will be from the past.)

I don’t believe that nature long ago yielded the evolution of apes into human beings.  Neither do I believe that God (or the gods) engineered such a development, as Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke seem to in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).  As for the quick transformation of man into something higher than man, there they’re on somewhat safer ground, even if the year 2001 turned out to be much too early for such a grand event.

In several ways Kubrick’s film is great, and in several ways it’s mediocre.  The cosmic, or Godly, employment of a monolith is never explained, and the psychedelia beyond Jupiter now looks cheap and silly.  It’s still a beautiful motion picture, though, and a technical wonder.  And there’s still nothing quite like it.
