The Short, Tragicomic “The Ring Cycle”

Many, many short films deserve praise. Erin Cramer demonstrated artistic skill by writing and directing the 13-minute “The Ring Cycle” (2014), starring Natalie Dormer. I saw it on YouTube and eagerly recommend it.

In such shows as Game of Thrones, Dormer hasn’t been free to show us what she’s capable of, but talent is assuredly there and in “Ring” it is amply used. Millie (Dormer) happily receives a wedding ring from Richard (Emun Elliott) who soon discontentedly renounces the marriage. But Millie, brought low, cannot discard the ring, and for all of this, Dormer has the versatility. With a wave of emotion cresting in her but never breaking, she is moving, and Cramer’s writing is poignant. And not at all mawkish. A personal short is frequently better than a commercial full-lengther.
